Southwest Florida may be known for its beautiful beaches and warm weather, but the region is also home to a fascinating history. The Calusa Indians first inhabited Fort Myers Beach, and the Mound House continues to share the history of this ancient culture today. Many centuries later, Florida became a popular destination for visitors to escape the cold of winter. Among these visitors was the renowned inventor Thomas Edison, who purchased a home in Fort Myers around the 1880s. At Edison Beach House, we have the vision to continue Edison’s dedication to hospitality with our luxury suites and attentive staff. Visit us in Fort Myers Beach and take a journey into the past at these Southwest Florida historical sites.

Thomas Edison and Henry Ford History in FL

If you would like to learn about the history of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford in Florida, then we recommend making the hour drive to Fort Myers. Our Edison Beach House is inspired by the beautiful Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates, which feature several Florida historical sites.

Edison-Ford Winter Estates

The Edison-Ford Winter Estates include 20 acres of historical buildings, gardens, a laboratory, and a museum. Walkthrough the historic homes on a self-guided tour with the audio narration when you download the Edison Ford App. There is also a museum that includes exhibits and artifacts that tell the story of these American icons.

Stroll the research gardens and see more than 1,700 plants planted by Edison and Ford. These plants were researched in the laboratory that remains a site for visitors to explore today. The estate is on the National Register of Historic Sites and continues to be one of the most visited historic homes in the country.

Mound House

Southwest Florida’s history began long before European settlement, and the presence of the Calusa people can still be felt today. The Mound House is a unique archaeological site featuring a 2,000-year-old Calusa Indian Shell Mound. This mound is made up of discarded tools that slowly amassed over time. There are several guided tours and programs available to learn about archaeology, Calusa tools, and Latino history.

There are two museums on-site where you can learn about the fascinating history and see artifacts from Estero Islands first people. The Stories Beneath Our Feet museum is underground and allows visitors to glimpse what the Calusa village may have been like in the past.
